The following is a small list of activities and local area info that we hope might help you understand how exciting Playa del Carmen really is.
Sightseeing in Playa del Carmen
The Mayan ruins at Tulum, Chichen Itza and Coba are simply stunning and a must do. Excursions run daily from various locations all over Playa del Carmen. We would highly recommend an English speaking tour guide. The island of Cozumel is only a short ferry trip away and the ferry port is only 10 mins from our condo. Cozumel is famous for having the world's second largest barrier reef so is fantastic for scuba diving and snorkelling.
Beaches in Playa del Carmen
Our Playa del Carmen condo rental's beach is a private beach tucked away in Phase 1 of Playacar to the south of Playa del Carmen. There is ample space and this is the only beach in Playa del Carmen with natural shade from trees. Coco Beach is on the north side of Playa. This is a long white beach with turquoise blue waters and often free from throngs of tourists. The famous Mamitas beach is only ten minutes walk away from our Playa del Carmen condo to the north.
Playa del Carmen is a haven for watersports enthusiasts with a full range of options such as - diving, kite surfing, snorkelling, jetskiing, water skiing, paragliding, canoeing, sailing, deep sea fishing, etc... The beach bar does an excellent Pina Colada, which goes down perfectly after your on-beach massage!
Playa del Carmen restaurants
With over 500 Playa del Carmen restaurants to choose from within walking distance from our our Playa del Carmen condo rental, you can enjoy cuisine from the four corners of the globe. We love Yaxche (the best for region specialities at a premium price that is worth every peso), Siesta Fiesta (comes with live music, a fun bar and great staff) and Casa del Agua (with nice views over 5th Avenue and a wonderful menu specializing in seafood and good wine list). Madre Tierra is another fantastic restuarant with great fish, divine, tender steaks and bold red wines.
If you are looking for some down to earth, authentic, delicious Mexican food, head to El Fogon on 30th. Try the cebollitas, Pastor tacos and Arrachera. The guacamole has some fire in it (seriously- it has brought tears to my eyes) so make sure you have Dos Equis or another local cerveza on hand to wash it all down with! We have our opinions of which are the best Playa del Carmen restaurants, but definitely ask around as new places are opening all the time.
Bars in Playa del Carmen
Being renowned for its nightlife, Playa del Carmen bars are well worth a visit. Whether you're looking for live music, dancing or just a quiet drink, the 5th Avenue caters for all. Simply take a walk down the Avenue or along Playa del Carmen beaches and we guarantee you'll find something different and something new everytime you look!
One of our favourite bars is Fusion right on the beach and 6th Street (Calle 6). You can expect great drinks either at the bar or at the tables on the beach. There is live music and a fire show most nights. The Blue Parrot is a must visit for its swings instead of bar stools and their legendary fire show. You can find the Blue Parrot on the beach at 12th Street (Calle 12) where there are loads of other great bars all around.
The Playa del Carmen golf courses
One of the Playa del Carmen golf courses is the exceptional Playacar Golf Course Resort, 10 minutes walk from our Playa del Carmen vacation condo which is as challenging as it is beautiful. Renowned architect Robert Van Hagge designed the 18-hole, par 72 course.
The Mayakoba Golf Resort is a short drive north, 25-20 minutes, and is the only PGA course outside of the US. We highly recommend this one.
